What is the Bellarine Landcare Group?

The Bellarine Landcare Group (BLG) is an incorporated body of community volunteers covering the Bellarine Peninsula east of the Barwon River and the catchment area of the Bellarine Ramsar Wetlands. It is part of the Victorian volunteer Landcare movement – a joint effort between volunteers, the community, government and business.

Since its inception in 1994, the BLG has been at the forefront of Landcare in the region working to preserve, protect and enhance the natural environment of the Bellarine Peninsula. BLG has over 60 members and continues to grow.

Vision: To preserve, protect and enhance the natural environment of the Bellarine Peninsula.

Mission statement: To promote biodiversity and the sustainable use of land and water resources to create a healthy and natural environment across the Bellarine Peninsula.

BLG aims to:

  • Enhance the strength of the organisation through cooperative inclusiveness
  • Strive to understand and learn more about the essential elements of natural eco systems
  • Promote a healthy and sustainable environment
  • Educate and inform the rural and urban community
  • Collaborate with other community groups and government organizations.

 Objectives:

  • To engage the broader community in an inclusive manner.
  • To provide educational opportunities to the broader community.
  • To undertake a wide range of projects on public and private land.
  • To ensure all projects are effectively resourced.
  • Remain transparent and accountable.

The BLG will achieve its goals by undertaking a range of activities, some of which are listed below. A full action plan has been developed. The action plan will be updated on an annual basis. The goals include

  • Gain sponsorship from local businesses.
  • Obtain a major sponsor.
  • Apply for grants from a range of organisations.
  • Work to control the impacts of key Pest Plants and Pest Animals on private / public land.
  • Re-vegetate with indigenous plants.
  • Run the Environmental Best Management Practice (EBMP) Program for landholders on the Bellarine.
  • Conduct surveys of the peninsula that identify rabbit harbor, major weed problems, pockets of remnant vegetation and endangered species.
  • Involve Landcare members in education and training programs.
  • Promote Landcare to the community via a range of stakeholders and events.
  • Promote Landcare in schools.
  • Advocate for local environment issues via local government, private organizations and the broader community.
  • Develop a landholder e-kit for all members and non-members to be accessed via the website.
